Use of Italian peace flags in Serbia

The Italian peace flags are gradually becoming popular in Serbia. Since 2003, they were noticed in several occasions.

The first of Italian peace flags was carried by the supporters of Socialist Party of Serbia in campaigns for parliamentary elections in 2003 and for local and provincial elections in summer 2004. This is a rather unexpected use, as most of people who use these flags in Serbia consider this party's policy in the past as war-mongering and its use of this flag as sheer pretending. The flag is different from most of the other such flags, as it uses English word PEACE instead of Italian word PACE. The colour pattern is: dark blue, light blue, violet, green, yellow, orange, red; white word PEACE is over violet and green.

The next appearance of an Italian peace flag was on 9 December 2004, during the protests against insufficient co-operation of the Serbian government with the Hague Tribunal. The photo of protesters carrying this flag has appeared on the cover page of the Belgrade newspaper Danas, issue of 10 December 2004. The same photo was later also found in Facebook photo gallery of the Social Democratic Youth, which is no longer online, the same fate having befallen several other sources which displayed the photos of the same flag. One of its latest recorded appearances was at the Belgrade Pride 2014, several photos from the event, which took place on 28 September 2014, still being available online. The one with the most complete view of the flag can be found here while the ones with incomplete view, which are available here, here and here, still reveal enough details of the flag to be useful in its recognition. The colour pattern was: dark blue, turquoise, light blue, green, yellow, orange and red; white word PACE was over light blue and green. Light blue and green are much lighter than on other similar flags, and dark blue is somewhat lighter than usual and sometimes also seems to slightly incline towards violet, but not on all photos, so it is probably just an optical illusion produced by the picture taking conditions.

Peace flag used in Serbia, February 2005

On 23 February 2005, when Gianfranco Fini, Italian minister of foreign affairs and leader of "post-Fascist" National Alliance, visited Belgrade, protests against his visit took place. The flag seen in the TV-reports from the event has had almost the same colour pattern as the most common version of the flag, only the top stripe was not violet, but purple.

The last of Italian peace flags which was noticed so far was carried on 8 March 2005, on the rally which was organized by some NGO's for the International Women's Day. The flag, as seen on the photo in the Belgrade newspaper Danas, issue of 9 March 2005, is identical with another of the most common versions of the flag: the same pattern as in the 2003-2004 flag with the inscription PEACE, only the inscription was PACE on this one.
